# Dilution liquid: bulk

**Bulk liquid is not sterile**

The 5 L container is not sterile. Sterile-filter the liquid immediately before you use it.

Mount a 0.22 µm syringe filter on the dilution dispenser, and the liquid is filtered as it leaves the dispenser, straight into the vial. Any 0.22 µm syringe filter works. SBT can supply one.

Never dispense without a filter, and never pour from the container into a vial.

**Do not store filled vials**

Fill only the vials you are about to use. A filled vial must not be kept overnight, because growth develops in it and skews your result.

Cold storage is not a fix. It may slow the growth, but it also takes the conductivity outside the range BactoBox® needs, and the measurement fails.

That comes to 500 particle-free vials and 5 L of liquid, so 500 dilutions. A sample that is diluted in two serial 1:100 steps uses two filled vials.

## The other way to get dilution vials

Ready-made vials arrive pre-filled and sterile, with no dispenser and no filling step. That is what we recommend for most labs.
