# Syringe filter

Sterile-filters the bulk dilution liquid as you dispense it.

## When you need one

A syringe filter fits the [dilution dispenser](/item-register/accessories/dilution-dispenser.md) and is only needed when you fill your own dilution vials. Replace it at the start of each operating day, so a pack of 40 covers 40 operating days.

**Bulk liquid is not sterile**

The 5 L container is not sterile. The syringe filter sterile-filters the liquid as it leaves the dispenser, so never dispense without one.

**Do not store filled vials**

Fill only the vials you are about to use. A filled vial must not be kept overnight, because growth develops in it and skews your result.

Cold storage is not a fix. It may slow the growth, but it also takes the conductivity outside the range BactoBox® needs, and the measurement fails.

**How to tell a filter is clogged**

A filter also clogs within a day, after roughly 200 to 500 mL dispensed, which is 20 to 50 dispenses of 10 mL. Replace it before the end of the day if you have to press harder to dispense, or if the dispenser starts to squeak. Either sign means dispensing is no longer accurate.
