# Check engine light

Like the one in your car, the check engine light tells you it is time for preventive maintenance.

The check engine light tells you that your BactoBox® is due for [preventive maintenance](/more/service-and-support/annual-preventive-maintenance.md). It appears in the upper right corner of the screen ([Dash](/software/dash/user-interface.md)).

{% hint style="success" %}
When the check engine light appears, schedule preventive maintenance as soon as possible. It is a paid service, unless your [service agreement](/item-register/service/service-agreement.md) covers it. [Contact us](https://sbtinstruments.com/contact) to book it.
{% endhint %}

## Can I keep using my BactoBox®?

Yes. The light means your setup is approaching a failure mode, not that it has failed. Your BactoBox® still works as intended.

## What turns the light on

The light appears when any of these is true:

* A year has passed since the last preventive maintenance.
* You have run 2 000 programs, such as measurements, since the last preventive maintenance.
* The latest QC test shows that your setup is approaching a failure mode.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.sbtinstruments.com/more/service-and-support/check-engine-light.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
