# Connect to Access

Connect your BactoBox® to your computer and open Access in your browser.

<figure><img src="https://4216107837-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FeYTtd7c0A325muFr5lMW%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-ff5925bfd29cc778d07f95d6a623cbfa58555693%2Fconnect-to-access--short.avif?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Access is a user interface for your BactoBox® that runs in a browser on your own computer. You use it to run and annotate measurements, download your data, update your BactoBox® software, and send a device data bundle to SBT support.

## What you need

* A computer with Windows 10 or later, macOS or Linux, and a USB Type-A port <img src="https://4216107837-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FeYTtd7c0A325muFr5lMW%2Fuploads%2FW8amWjMEzjGD2BWfybb3%2FUSB-A.png?alt=media&#x26;token=13d1aa14-e865-4d86-b02d-5ba542415e1b" alt="" data-size="line">. Use an adapter if your computer has only USB-C.
* The [USB cable](/item-register/bactobox-r/bactobox-r/in-the-box/usb-cable.md) supplied with your BactoBox®.

On software older than v2026.09, Access works only on Windows. Use a Windows computer to update first. See [Update BactoBox® software](/more/software/update-bactobox-r-software.md).

## Step by step

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Connect the cable to your BactoBox®

{% hint style="warning" %}
Wait until your BactoBox® shows the *Ready* screen. Connecting during a measurement may disrupt it.
{% endhint %}

Insert the micro-B end of the USB cable into the port on the side of your BactoBox®.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Connect the cable to your computer

Insert the other end into a USB Type-A port on your computer.

<figure><img src="https://4216107837-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FeYTtd7c0A325muFr5lMW%2Fuploads%2FwHqzGElUihAiXlXKrCbH%2Flaptop--simple-outline--insert-usb-cable.png?alt=media&#x26;token=c1b6d81a-5c76-4610-a361-7153b5751fef" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Open Access

After a short while, your computer shows your BactoBox® as a USB drive, for example `D:\`.

<figure><img src="https://4216107837-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FeYTtd7c0A325muFr5lMW%2Fuploads%2FL0ASRX0xfiIlV679aFsN%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=8c249b7f-158d-4b58-a005-a1990a11361f" alt=""><figcaption><p>File browser that shows BactoBox® files</p></figcaption></figure>

Open the file *SBT Access.html*. Access opens in your browser.

<figure><img src="https://4216107837-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FeYTtd7c0A325muFr5lMW%2Fuploads%2FoUmsrUtlULlJooSE4fMT%2Fswupdate-edge-frame-win-light.webp?alt=media&#x26;token=6080aa42-6574-48f7-b443-20aa4672a8a1" alt=""><figcaption><p>The <em>Software update</em> page in Access.</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
Nothing happens? Check that your BactoBox® is on and that the cable is fully inserted at both ends. Then try opening <http://10.20.30.40> in your browser. Still stuck? See [Can not connect to Access](/troubleshooting/other-problems/cannot-connect-to-access.md).
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.sbtinstruments.com/more/software/connect-to-access.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
