# Software update failed

The software update stops with a message.

You tried to [update BactoBox® software](/more/software/update-bactobox-r-software.md), and Access shows *update failed*.

Click the *Messages* field below it to expand it. Find the lines that start with <mark style="color:red;">ERROR</mark>, and look up the message below.

## SW not compatible with hardware

The update file does not fit your BactoBox® hardware. The current file on [Update BactoBox® software](/more/software/update-bactobox-r-software.md) works for hardware v7.5 and later. Very old hardware no longer gets updates. If yours is older, [contact support](/troubleshooting/contact-support.md).

## CPIO Format not recognized

The file is in the wrong format. Use an update file that ends in [.swu](/software/file-formats/swu-file.md).

## Checksum WRONG !

Often followed by a line such as `Computed 0xf3e09ee1, it should be 0xf3e09f86`.

The file was damaged while it was copied or downloaded. Download it again, and try the update with the new file.
