## When to do preventive maintenance

Schedule your BactoBox® for [preventive maintenance](https://help.sbtinstruments.com/encyclopedia/item-register/service-agreement/preventive-maintenance) in these cases:

* **At least once a year.**
* When the [check-engine-light](https://help.sbtinstruments.com/protocols/maintenance/check-engine-light "mention") shows.

## What is preventive maintenance

Preventive maintenance is a series of repairing/replacing parts in your BactoBox® and subsequent checks. Preventive maintenance ensures optimal BactoBox® performance and reliability.

This is an *incomplete* list of the preventive maintenance steps:

* Replace the pump tubing
* Replace the internal filter
* [Update software](https://help.sbtinstruments.com/protocols/best-practices/update-bactobox-r-software) to the [latest version
  ](https://help.sbtinstruments.com/encyclopedia/software/bactobox-r-software-changelog)
* Check all hardware and sensors
* Perform leakage tests
* Test unit functionality
